Parents taught us not to judge someone based on appearance alone, especially when first met. However, recent studies have surprisingly shown, it is often the first impression right.
More than 100 students of University of Texas was involved in research on personality assessment based on appearance. The students acted as subjects or as a juror rater. As jurors, they were asked to assess someone's personality from a photograph.
Here's how research is conducted. First, respondents were asked to pose stiffly, staring into the camera, not smiling, legs pressed together and hands at your sides. After that, they were asked to pose again, this time by natural and spontaneous. Then the respondents were asked to fill out questionnaires about their personalities. The colleagues they were also asked to mention personality traits of the respondents.
After that, the judges evaluate the personality of the subject being photographed. Apparently upon seeing the first photograph, the jury was able to accurately assess the character of the subject, that is extrovert, confident, or a religious person. Then when viewing pictures with natural poses, the majority of the jury to assess appropriately the subject's personality.
"Since old people often make judgments based on minimal information. However, the results of this study we can say that first impressions are indeed emit a person's character, even just by looking at his picture," says Sam Gosling, a researcher from the University of Texas.
Gosling added, people are extrovert or an open personality tend to smile more, stand with energetic, healthy looking, sleek, and stylish. Gosling concludes, our personalities may be read from the appearance and expression. Then maybe we should judge a book by its cover.
